Arcelor Mittal Temirtau

ArcelorMittal Temirtau, the Kazakhstan-based subsidiary of steel giant ArcelorMittal, Tubular Products (formerly part of Kazakh Karmet steel works) produces longitudinal welded tubes, mainly for the mechanical industry, but also for use in water and gas distribution. ArcelorMittal Temirtau, Tubular Products modernized facilities in north east Kazakhstan consist of tube mills, as well as machinery for cutting and beveling. The tubes are produced in accordance with the standards prevailing in the region. Their pipes and tubes are also exported to many of the member countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Previously ArcelorMittal Temirtau purchased billets from Ukraine and Russia. In November 2009, the company secured supplies of 8,000-9,000 mt of billet per year from Kazakh-based Vtorprom; however, this is not enough to enable its long product rolling shop to operate at full capacity. However, since imported billet is not enough to operate long product rolling mill with full capacity, top management decided to invest for new continuous casting machine and has signed a contract with Turkish steel plants designer and manufacturer CVS for the supply and installation of its first continuous square billet caster for long steel production.

The plant is designed according to the latest technology in the field of steel plant machinery and equipment.

The scope of the project is the production of steel billets through the installation of a new Continuous Casting Machine (CCM) fitted with six casting strands.

The scope of work consists of the following main objects:

  • Engineering development
  • Mechanical and electrical equipment manufacturing
  • Mechanical and electrical equipment supply
  • Supervision to erection
  • Supervision to start-up and commissioning
  • Training of Buyer's personnel.

The selection of the various equipment and system making up the new plant is strictly related to the achievement of the following high-priority objectives, namely:

  • Limited investment costs
  • High quality products
  • High productivity
  • Maximum simplicity of operation
  • Operation reliability
  • Maximum flexibility to meet various market demands.

The technological solutions were selected with the objectives in mind to use most innovative systems and achieve highest quality levels by a compact plant configuration.

The CCM will be located in BOF shop of ArcelorMIttal Temirtau plant at Kazakhstan.

This is one of the most modern, competitive and flexible CCM for the production of billets. The CCM is designed to guarantee a productivity of 1,48 Miotpy of commercial quality, low carbon steel, and medium carbon steel.  The new CCM, designed to produce 1,48 million t/year of square billet is designed, manufactured, and commissionned by CVS MAKINA and taken into operation on 19.11.2011 with the participitation of Kazakhstan Prime Minister, Mr. Nursultan Nazarbayev, and owner of Arcelor Mittal group, Mr. Lakshmi Mittal.

One 6-strand multi bending 9/17 m radius billet caster will be taken into operation within only 14-months after signature. First heat will be taken at the end of 2011. Thus, by constructing its own continuous caster, with the plan to complete the Project within 12 months, and by achieving full production capacity at its long product shop, plan of ArcelorMittal Temirtau is to satisfy the domestic demand for long steel as well as to allow Kazakhstan to reduce the imports of these important products for the construction industry.

The new six-strand continuous billet caster will allow ArcelorMittal Temirtau to increase its production capacity from four to five million mt of steel per year, to satisfy the needs in billet of its long product rolling shop, and in the future to enable it to expand its product range by producing quality long products such as rebar, angles, channels and T-sections.
